Josh Morrissey’s recovery is taking longer than Winnipeg expected, leaving Neal Pionk with a bigger assignment heading into the weekend. Jets coach Scott Arniel changed Morrissey’s upper-body injury designation from day-to-day to week-to-week Thursday, according to Jake Tye of The Hockey News. No return date was announced.

The longer recovery window makes Pionk’s expanded opportunity relevant beyond a one-night replacement call. Tye reported that Pionk has absorbed top-pairing and power-play responsibilities during Morrissey’s absence. That makes his deployment worth checking beyond a single night’s box score.

The power-play opportunity already has supporting evidence. In his Thursday preview for JetsNation, Calvin Sinclair reported that Arniel praised Pionk’s move onto the first unit against Minnesota and the pass he made on Mark Scheifele’s goal. Pionk finished that game with two assists.

Pionk followed with a goal and two assists Thursday against Chicago.

For fantasy purposes, the useful development is access to Winnipeg’s offensive possessions. A defenseman directing the first power-play unit can share scoring sequences with the forwards a Jets stack already needs to produce. Pionk’s involvement on Scheifele’s goal shows the connection readers should examine when comparing him with other defensemen, rather than treating the injury as an automatic invitation to chase his latest point total.

Winnipeg hosts Carolina on Saturday, October 17, at 3:30 p.m. ET.

Beyond that matchup, the assignment to follow is Pionk’s place on the first power-play unit. If he retains it while Morrissey recovers, he offers a continuing way to connect a defense slot with Winnipeg’s scoring forwards. His role should be reassessed when the Jets change their units or provide another update on Morrissey.
