Bills coach Joe Brady has warned that James Cook could lose carries if his ball-security problems continue. Cook fumbled twice in Buffalo’s Week 5 overtime victory over the Rams on Monday, October 12, including one lost in overtime. He has four fumbles through five games, with two lost. Brady’s warning followed on Tuesday, but no reduction in Cook’s workload has been confirmed.

Why Buffalo’s backfield is suddenly worth watching

Cook remains the Bills’ lead runner and a productive part of their offense. Brady stressed that he trusts Cook and put him back in the game after the mistakes. The coach also made clear that repeated turnovers could force a change. As NFL.com’s report details, Cook has 532 rushing yards and five touchdowns through five games. This is a conditional warning, not a demotion or a new depth chart.

Ray Davis and Ty Johnson are the backup running backs to monitor if Buffalo actually pulls back Cook’s rushing work. CBS Sports reported that the pair have received relatively little rushing work this season and have been more involved as receivers. That distinction matters: extra Cook carries would not necessarily be split evenly, and neither backup has been promised a larger role.

Week 6 DraftKings DFS impact

Buffalo visits Las Vegas on Sunday, October 18. Cook’s demonstrated production still supports a substantial role, but the fumble issue adds uncertainty to his Week 6 touch ceiling. DFS players should not automatically project a Cook benching, a Davis breakout, or a Johnson rushing spike. If Brady confirms fewer carries or practice usage reveals a changed rotation, reconsider Cook’s expected volume and reassess the two backups in the actual Sunday contest pool. If no role change materializes, the warning alone is not evidence of reduced touches.

The next useful checkpoints are Buffalo’s Week 6 practice updates and Brady’s further comments on the rotation. No DraftKings salary, projected ownership or betting price is asserted without the correct current slate data.
