Michael Pittman Jr. Out Multiple Weeks: Steelers Week 5 DFS and Betting Impact

Michael Pittman Jr. will miss multiple weeks with a foot injury. What the Steelers news means for Roman Wilson, DK Metcalf, Germie Bernard and Week 5 DFS.

October 8, 2026: Pittsburgh’s receiving rotation is changing again. Steelers head coach Mike McCarthy confirmed Thursday that Michael Pittman Jr. aggravated the foot injury he has been managing and is expected to miss multiple weeks. That removes him from Sunday’s home matchup with his former team, the Indianapolis Colts, and creates another opportunity for Roman Wilson and Germie Bernard. For DraftKings players, the important question is not simply who replaces Pittman on the depth chart. It is how Pittsburgh distributes routes, targets and valuable scoring opportunities.

What we know about Pittman’s injury

McCarthy described this as a multi-week absence, not a routine game-time decision. Pittsburgh is still evaluating whether Pittman needs a move to injured reserve. That decision has not been confirmed, so it would be premature to attach a specific return date to his situation.

Pittman had already missed Week 2 with a foot problem. According to reporting published Thursday, he has seven catches for 89 yards in three appearances this season. Those modest totals matter when evaluating the replacement opportunity. Pittsburgh is not trying to redistribute an enormous existing target share. The more interesting effect is the potential to consolidate routes and give emerging players a steadier role.

Roman Wilson has the clearest opportunity

Wilson is the first player to examine. He had already become a meaningful part of the Steelers’ passing game rather than waiting for Pittman’s injury to create his first opening. Pittsburgh-focused reporting Thursday identified Wilson as the team’s second-most-targeted pass catcher behind DK Metcalf entering this stretch, and McCarthy spoke positively about his development as a route runner.

That combination is more useful than a simplistic “backup becomes starter” argument. Wilson has shown signs of earning trust and can build on an existing role. His appeal in daily fantasy depends on whether his routes and targets rise enough to outweigh any salary increase or popularity spike. If the market treats him like an automatic smash simply because Pittman is sidelined, there may be less tournament leverage than his story initially suggests.

Watch where Wilson lines up, too. A receiver who primarily operates inside does not necessarily inherit every outside snap vacated by another player. Opportunity can spread across multiple personnel groupings, which is why a direct one-for-one projection would be misleading.

DK Metcalf: More secure role, not an automatic projection surge

Metcalf remains Pittsburgh’s established lead receiving option. Pittman’s absence could make Metcalf’s path to high-value targets a little cleaner, but it does not mean the Steelers suddenly throw substantially more passes. The offense’s overall efficiency, game plan, and the Colts’ defensive approach all matter.

For cash builds, Metcalf deserves attention because of his established role. In tournaments, the calculus is different. A more concentrated passing attack can help his ceiling, but popular assumptions about an injured teammate sometimes push ownership higher than the actual projection gain. Compare his salary, expected targets and projected roster percentage against other receivers in the same range before deciding he belongs in every lineup.

Where Germie Bernard fits

Rookie Germie Bernard is the less established name who could benefit from the vacancy. Local Steelers reporting specifically identified Bernard alongside Wilson as a candidate for expanded opportunities. That makes him a player to monitor, not someone we can responsibly call a locked-in value before the final personnel picture is clearer.

Snap counts and route participation will tell us much more than a nominal depth-chart designation. A cheap receiver running only occasional routes can still be a poor DraftKings play. If Bernard earns a near-full route workload, though, he becomes a more interesting salary-relief option. Do not confuse that possible outcome with an already verified Week 5 role.

What this changes for Week 5 DraftKings

The first adjustment should be to remove Pittman from eligible lineup plans for the Colts game, then reassess the remaining Steelers pass catchers with current salaries and confirmed availability. We are deliberately not attaching salary figures or ownership percentages here because those inputs need to be checked against the live contest and slate before they are presented as facts.

Use the Cover The Slate NFL projections and research tools to compare projected points, matchup context, usage, and ownership once the relevant slate has been refreshed. The biggest edge may come from separating genuine additional opportunity from a headline-driven ownership bump. Roman Wilson is an intriguing candidate for added volume; Bernard needs role confirmation; Metcalf should be evaluated as a strong incumbent rather than automatically credited with every vacated target.

Does the news create a Steelers-Colts betting angle?

It belongs in the handicap, but it is not enough by itself to justify a bet on Indianapolis, an under, or a Pittsburgh player prop. Pittman has been limited statistically this season, and a market may already account for the absence. The right question is whether the adjusted line or prop still offers value after the news has been priced in.

For receiving props, wait until books post current numbers and compare them with each player’s realistic route and target outlook. For the game total and side, combine this news with quarterback health, offensive-line availability and the full injury reports for both teams. Do not chase an old price that no longer exists.

The CTS takeaway

Pittman’s absence is real and stretches beyond a single Sunday. Wilson is the most immediately interesting DFS name because his role was developing before the injury. Metcalf remains central to the offense, while Bernard is a watch-list candidate whose value depends on playing time. We will judge these players on opportunity, price and expected ownership, not the injury headline alone.
